Day 6 PRE Check

Windy as all get out this morning. The bed cover has to be fully unsnapped to get to all the tools and fluid containers for the morning checks. Last time I unsnapped the bedcover in the wind, it acted like a sail. Took me fifteen minutes of grunting and cussin' to get it snapped back in place. I settled this morning for an engine oil check only. It's still at the full mark.

Mother is still set to avoid unpaved roads but a few hundred yards from the Blackwell hotel entrance, she directed me down eight miles of gravel road.

I can see the Interstate that I suspect Mother wants me on running parallel to the gravel road in the distance to my left (It's not in the pic).

Mother could have gotten on I35 at the motel intersection but chose to ignore her unpaved road avoidance instead. I've been working on BillyBob to exhibit a farm truck flavor and his new patina of dust fits right in with the mason jar of hooch and pack of Chesterfields on the seat.

Arrived at the Best Western Sun Dome about 11:30 am. A motley crew erupted from the lobby doors as I pulled up. It was Cletis of both the OldGMCtrucks and Stovebolt forums and Greg Hill (Greg_H at OldGMCtrucks). Greg's father and son were here too. We couldn't check in yet so we headed off to the show grounds with Cletis in the lead in his red Task Force Chevy pickup. It's either a '55 2nd Series or '56.

ATHS Truck Show, Thursday

We got to the Kansas State Fairgrounds were the show is being held and got our registration and photo processes taken care of first. Greg got 52geemsee on the cell phone to see where our group was. This is a big show with potentially 1,000 trucks. You can get lost. We were located in the building with the GMC exhibits but were soon to be evicted. One of the officials led BillyBob and I over there in a golf cart. Helped to load up and move to another location outside.

Click to display large 436Kb image in separate windowWhen we got the trucks settled in, 52geemsee's demo GMC 302 engine was unloaded. This thing is fired up every once in awhile to wake people up. Here, Greg Macha (gmacha) explains some fine point to Arlyn Unrein (52geemsee aka Deerslayer). Arlyn looks like he needs more convincin'.

Click to display large 456Kb image in separate windowHere's the lineup so far. Two Jimmys and 2 Chebbys. Cletis's Task Force Chevy in the foreground, then Arlyn's GMC with the trailer that hauls the engine, then BillyBob with Rick Wagner's (BigSix302) Jimmy Suburban on tne end.

Click to display large 408Kb image in separate windowHere's the lineup from the other end. Rick's suburban is deceptive. There is a hopped up military 303 in that engine bay. Bob Dyck (GMCBob), the fella on the local scene who orchestrated our local events arrived later with his Jimmy Pickup with yet another 302 GMC engine.

A lot of time was spent walking around this thing and trying to decipher the faded signs. Bill Burch (v4Bill) determined that the chickens were not NOS.
