Day 21 SITREP

Got another fairly early start today. Like Savannah, I counldn't find a Holiday Inn in St. Augustine with a vacancy so I settled for Palm Coast, Florida, about thirty miles south of St. Augustine and programmed that into Mother after the reservation was confirmed.

Day 21 PRE Check

Parked on the level again last night so the full check on BillyBob's fluids was performed. Again, everything was ok 'cept for the steering gearbox. It was not leaking out as bad as before tho' with the STP replacing the gear oil so, it was topped off with more STP Oil Treatment.

Click to display large 317Kb image in separate windowAt my second gas stop of the day, I came around the truck to a "Oh Spit!" moment. At the last gas station one hundred eighty odd miles back, I left the gas cap on the bed cover when I left. Damnation! Then I looked down and saw I had gotten a mulligan for my stupid attack. There was the gas cap, setting on the jerry can handle. It was not wedged in. How it had landed and stayed there for all that distance in the wind, I will nebber figure out.

Click to display large 201Kb image in separate windowI hit the Florida state line at 12:45 pm. US 129 took us to US 41 to SR 100 to SR 121 to SR 16. On SR 16 we passed the New River Prison Facility. I had mixed feelings when a hard rain hit. I don't like driving in it much but the cool down is welcome. Here I'm following the last Humvee in a military convoy. SR 16 took us to US 1 to SR 312 and we arrived at the hotel in Palm Coast about 5 pm.

Day 21 POST Check

1. Date and Time June 29, 2007 5:00 PM
2. Odometer 24,741
3. Mileage 386
4. Elapsed Time 9 hrs

This was a long run and I was beat. I ate some of my trail mix and hit the sheets early. I smoked my last cigar, the one I was saving to ponder a "on the side of the road" breakdown. I was pretty confident at this point that BillyBob would take us all the way without a mechanical failure.
