7. Macungie RunDay 21 SITREPGot another fairly early start today. Like Savannah, I counldn't find a Holiday Inn in St. Augustine with a vacancy so I settled for Palm Coast, Florida, about thirty miles south of St. Augustine and programmed that into Mother after the reservation was confirmed. Let Mother have the lead again for the last time and again kept track of the routes she took us on. First stretch was local roads from GA 30 to US 280 to GA 135 to US 441 to US 221 to US 129. A lot of this was country roads and small towns.
At my second gas stop of the day, I came around the truck to a "Oh Spit!" moment. At the last gas station one hundred eighty odd miles back, I left the gas cap on the bed cover when I left. Damnation! Then I looked down and saw I had gotten a mulligan for my stupid attack. There was the gas cap, setting on the jerry can handle. It was not wedged in. How it had landed and stayed there for all that distance in the wind, I will nebber figure out.
I hit the Florida state line at 12:45 pm. US 129 took us to US 41 to SR 100 to SR 121 to SR 16. On SR 16 we passed the New River Prison Facility. I had mixed feelings when a hard rain hit. I don't like driving in it much but the cool down is welcome. Here I'm following the last Humvee in a military convoy. SR 16 took us to US 1 to SR 312 and we arrived at the hotel in Palm Coast about 5 pm.

This was a long run and I was beat. I ate some of my trail mix and hit the sheets early. I smoked my last cigar, the one I was saving to ponder a "on the side of the road" breakdown. I was pretty confident at this point that BillyBob would take us all the way without a mechanical failure.
